Up On The Shoulder
It started with a very simple question, "what is campdraft?". So we headed west to Longreach and beyond in search of an answer, to talk to 'campdrafters' and stockmen. What we found is more than a unique Australian sport, we discovered a way of life and a strong sense of community.
'Up On The Shoulder' is a story of Campdraft told by those people who compete, and those wanting to keep the 'Stockman' tradition alive. It features Pete Comiskey, John Arnold, Rusty Frame and others telling us what makes Campdraft so unique.
Our trip took us to Murrundi NSW for the 'King of the Range' Stockman Challenge to Capella in central Queensland for the ACA Campdraft Championshiips.
We found the answer to our question and much more.
A sport that has its origins in the life and work of the stockmen of the 1800s, a sport that is unique to Australia that's Campdraft. Life in the bush has changed in the last 150 years but the enduring sense of mateship, a love of the land, and the Aussie spirit of having a go has made Campdraft a National sport. It's part skill and finesse, part adrenalin pumping contact sport. 'Up on the Shoulder' takes a look at how the skills of the Australian Stockman are being preserved through competitions like Campdraft and the King of the Ranges.
Meet some Campdraft champions and characters of the bush. See some of Australia's Top Stockmen and women compete in an event honouring Archie Bung McInnes, regarded by many as one of the most accomplished bushmen of his time and known as the King of the Ranges. Its a gruelling competition testing bushmans skills of brumby catching, bronc riding, packhorse, whip cracking, roping and cross country there's even a billy boiling race!
